Valve Material Specifications

The selection of valve materials plays an important role in ensuring reliable performance across different oil and gas applications. Choosing the right material depends mainly on two key factors: mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion.

Valve strength refers to the ability of the material to withstand internal pressure and mechanical stress during operation. This is typically evaluated based on the tensile strength of the material.

Strength Considerations

Applications involving higher pressure require stronger materials such as forged steel or high alloy steels. For lower pressure systems, materials with lower tensile strength, such as cast iron, may be sufficient.

Corrosion Resistance

Corrosion resistance is another critical factor when selecting valve materials. Corrosion occurs when metals deteriorate due to chemical reactions with the process media or surrounding environment.

This is especially important in industries such as chemical processing, where valves are exposed to aggressive substances, high temperatures, and elevated pressures. Certain chemicals can rapidly damage standard materials like iron or carbon steel if not properly selected.

In many cases, internal corrosion caused by the process fluid is more significant than external surface rust. Factors such as fluid composition, operating temperature, and environmental conditions must all be considered when evaluating corrosion resistance.
